Uptown Minneapolis: The Place to Be

If ever there is a place to live to be absorbed into Minneapolis culture, it’s Uptown. It’s a true culmination of worlds in a few square city blocks: Young, old, bachelors, families, artists, bookworms, partiers, hippies—anyone and everyone has a place within the confines of this cozy little metropolitan corner. Sitting roughly one mile south of Downtown Minneapolis, Uptown is stuffed to the gills with chain store favorites, local goods, grocery stores, coffee shops, nightlife, great grub and more.

The rugged edges and lush beaches of Lake Calhoun establish Uptown’s west side as it spans east, encompassing four neighborhoods—Lowry Hill East, ECCO, CARAG and East Isles. The pulse of Uptown, however, truly emanates from the busy intersection of Lake St. and Hennepin Ave. This part of town is crawling with recent college grads in classic brownstones to retirees kickin’ back in sleek new condos. With its desirable bounty of both high-energy and low-key entertainment, Uptown is a veritable mecca of things to do any given day of the week. What are you waiting for? The fun is waiting for you.

The History of Uptown

One intangible draw to Uptown is the abundance of lakes. These lakes play a crucial role in the establishment and history of the area as a whole. In the late 19th century, Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet and Lake of the Isles served as great destinations for vacation homes and boating. Mobility was enhanced with the historic Como-Harriet Streetcar and soon after residential housing grew tremendously through the 1920s. Classic brownstone multi-residential apartment buildings started popping up and serve as homes to people still today.

Decades beyond the 1920s lead to increased crime until the 1970s when Uptown underwent an artistic renaissance. Soon retailers and business owners started setting up shop and reaping the benefits of commuters as Uptown became a popular route connecting Downtown to the growing suburbs. Today it’s a convenient and happening sector that sits right off of busy highways or easy accessibility.

What Makes Uptown Minneapolis Great?

If the dovetailing of ages, lifestyles, cultures and professions isn’t enough to love about Uptown, let us tempt you to this booming neighborhood with its never-ending variety of restaurants, coffeehouses, entertainment and shopping venues. Public transportation is frequent and abundant or, with your own sweat equity, you can traverse the city via the paved 5-mile long bike path dubbed the Greenway. You can live in elaborate mansions of Kenwood, modest homes mingled between classic brownstones or chic condos with elaborate amenities—there is truly a place for everyone here.

With such clashing of cultures and tastes, Uptown’s restaurant scene almost perfectly reflects tastes of the world. A growing population means more restaurants are popping up—each with their own perfect unique menu. With such variety, you’ll be tempted to try a new place to eat at every night for a month. There is classic American fare served beside French-inspired cuisine and mile-high desserts. Some restaurants rotate menus frequently to keep you clamoring back for more and more…and more. When you come to Uptown, be sure to pack an empty stomach and big eyes.

French Meadows Bakery:  If you love brunch, you’ll love French Meadows. Especially the eggs benedict.

Origami Sushi

Coup d’état: Have you ever imagined an amped up Big Mac? Look no further than this joint’s classic burger, complete with special sauce. Of course everything privileged to be made by these chefs is perfection, though, so you can’t go wrong.

Bryant Lake Bowl:  While Bryant Lake Bowl is a venue also known for its classic bowling lanes and small stage theater, it also serves up some of the most imaginative and delicious bar food this side of the Mississippi.

Sebastian Joe’s:  Some of the best ice cream in the entire Twin Cities served year-round. Get there early anytime the temperature spikes, though, or you’ll be waiting in a line that goes out the door.

Uptown has always been crawling with great bars, but now it’s becoming a magnet to startup craft breweries. Some of these breweries also cook up a menu offering tremendous variety and some take advantage of the abundance of surrounding restaurants as they offer food from neighboring grub hubs.

LynLake Brewery

Moto-i:  While also an exquisite Japanese-inspired restaurant with one of the best rooftop patios in town, Moto-i is also one of the few sake breweries in the nation. Now isn’t that neat?

The Herkimer

Pryes Brewing Company

As the average age of an Uptown inhabitant is under 30, it’s a neighborhood well-stocked with college students. As we all know, college students need a good coffee shop to bunker down and put their nose to the studious grindstone. Any of these coffee shops offers a prime environment to get some studying underway, meet with friends, read a book or simply sit back and take in the sounds from Uptown’s incessantly busy streets.

Urban Bean

Dunn Bros.

Butter Bakery

Isles Bun and Coffee:  The “bun” part of this coffee shop is to die for. Make sure you get your coffee with a side of cinnamon bun to start your day off right.

Uptown was made for spending your entire night there (this is why living there is so convenient to the action). From movie theaters to theatrical stages to dinner and late-night brews, it’s truly a hub for all things entertainment. Catch a comedy show, bowl a few frames and take a dip into a few of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes they’re always talking about.

Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater: As mentioned before for its fine eats, BLB also has a small theater with frequent performances of various local plays and shows. What’s more is this space also houses a small bowling alley with the neatest lanes you’ve ever knocked the pins down on.

HUGE Improv Theater

Up-Down Arcade

Live Music  Nearly any bar in Uptown will have live music. Simply check online to see who’s playing on which stage and your night will be all set

While Uptown may seem like a small town, don’t underestimate the sheer number of shops scattered throughout. Walking down Hennepin Ave. and Lake St. will have you strolling through a veritable mall of clothing, home goods, skateboarding paraphernalia, cooking equipment, high-tech equipment and more. Anything you need can be obtained from one of the many shops in busy Uptown.
